Serving as a Board Member

Serving as a Board Member

For many people, their first experience in organizational leadership will come when they join the board of a Christian church or agency.  They need to transition from their role as donor/volunteer/beneficiary into their new governance role.  This seminar will help directors shorten the learning curve and improve their governance skills as the seminar takes them from the nomination process through to the end of their term.

In this three-hour seminar we will cover:

  • You’ve been nominated!  Should you accept?
  • You’ve been elected!  How to get oriented
  • Special things to know about charities
  • Board confidentiality and solidarity
  • How board meetings work
  • Your first board meeting - preparation and participation
  • Agendas and getting on them
  • Principles of good governance
  • Discussion, dialogue, disagreement and discernment
  • Your new relationship with staff
  • Your new relationship with members
  • Minutes and post-meeting activities
  • Retiring well

This seminar is designed for current and prospective board members of churches and agencies. Board chairs and chairs of the nominating and governance committees will find the information helpful for board recruiting and orientation sessions.
