A mindset of health and safety needs to be built into the design of every charity position. Even for those working in an office environment, safety should be an ongoing discussion as there are always ways to improve health and safety on the job (e.g., design of ergonomic work stations).
Newer workers can be up to four times more likely to sustain a workplace injury than their counterparts who have been on the job for a year or more. Unfortunately, critical injuries are still far too common in Canada, and Christian workplaces are not immune from this.
Staff members, managers, and charities each have specific obligations under the relevant health and safety legislation to ensure a safe workplace. Charities and individuals that do not meet their obligations under the legislation may be subject to significant monetary fines, and in some cases, criminal charges may even be laid.
