Human Resources

Charities deal with many issues surrounding employment: interviews, background and criminal checks, hiring contracts, and terminations.

Employers should note that the worker’s status as a self-employed contractor or an employee impacts several employment issues:

  • entitlement to benefits (e.g., extended health coverage, private pension plan)
  • the employer’s obligations regarding statutory deductions (tax, EI, CPP)
  • employment obligations (e.g., maternal/paternal leave, sick leave, overtime)
  • management (e.g., terms of supervision, evaluations, applicability of staff policies)

Therefore, employers must clarify the status of their workers to avoid confusion surrounding employment issues.
