Missionaries & Long-term Missions

Missionaries are individuals who are sent on a mission to complete charitable activities or programs on behalf of a charity (the “sending agency”).  Whether as employees or as volunteers, missionaries are fully accountable to the charity for direction and control of resources. Sending agencies use missionaries (short and long term) for activities and programs both in Canada and abroad.

“Missions” traditionally means out-of-Canada ministry by long-term missionaries. When sending out long-term missionaries, there are several essential issues to consider:

  • ongoing financial support
  • administration (reporting and accountability)
  • risk management (safety and security)
  • the missionary’s eligibility for pensions, EI
  • status as a resident (and taxpayer) of Canada and perhaps elsewhere
  • healthcare
  • education of children
