{"id":14690,"date":"2013-06-12T20:00:00","date_gmt":"2013-06-13T00:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.cccc.org\/news_blogs\/cccc\/2013\/06\/12\/supreme-court-decides-to-hear-high-schools-appeal-for-ethics-course-exemption\/"},"modified":"2016-09-08T14:50:45","modified_gmt":"2016-09-08T18:50:45","slug":"supreme-court-decides-to-hear-high-schools-appeal-for-ethics-course-exemption","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.cccc.org\/news_blogs\/cccc\/2013\/06\/12\/supreme-court-decides-to-hear-high-schools-appeal-for-ethics-course-exemption\/","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court Decides to Hear High School\u2019s Appeal for Ethics Course Exemption"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Supreme Court of Canada announced today that it will hear the case of Loyola High School (LHS) and the Attorney General of Quebec.<sup><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftn1\">1<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0LHS argued that, as a religious institution, it has a religious freedom right under the Canadian Charter of Rights to be exempt from having to teach the Quebec Government\u2019s ethics and religious culture program.<\/p>\n<p>LHS has proposed its own curriculum to meet the government\u2019s objectives.\u00a0That exemption request was rejected by the Minister of Education because the LHS proposal was created from a faith-based perspective rather than a \u201ccultural\u201d approach.\u00a0LHS brought a motion for judicial review of the Minister\u2019s decision at the Superior Court of Quebec.\u00a0The Superior Court quashed the Minister\u2019s decision and gave LHS an exemption allowing it to substitute its own program.\u00a0However, the Court of Appeal sided with the government and confirmed the Minister\u2019s decision.<sup>2<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>LHS will now make its arguments before the Supreme Court of Canada.\u00a0This case is very important to watch as it will decide the parameters of a religious institution\u2019s claim to the fundamental right to freedom of religion.\u00a0The hearing date is yet to be set.<\/p>\n<div>\n<hr align=\"left\" size=\"1\" width=\"33%\" \/>\n<div>\n<p><a title=\"\" href=\"#_ftnref1\">1<\/a>\u00a0 <i>Loyola High School et al. v.
