The purpose of the blitz inspections is to protect vulnerable workers. The blitzes seek to ensure that employers are complying with key requirements of Ontario\u2019s Employment Standards Act<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[i]<\/a>. Specifically, the MOL will inspect violations of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Minimum wage<\/li>\n<li>Overtime pay<\/li>\n<li>Meal breaks<\/li>\n<li>Other worker entitlements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Precarious employment is defined as \u201cwork that is seasonal, part-time or temporary\u201d and is contrasted to traditional employment which \u201ctypically involves a full-time, permanent arrangement with one employer\u201d.<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[ii]<\/a>\u00a0 Ontario, like other provinces, has seen an increase in the proportion of jobs economists deem \u201cprecarious\u201d, with national statistics indicating that 40% of workers are engaged in precarious forms of work.<a href=\"#_edn3\" name=\"_ednref3\">[iii]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The MOL is particularly interested in workplaces where the following groups of individuals are employed:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>New, young, and vulnerable workers engaged in \u201cprecarious employment\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Temporary foreign workers engaged in all types of employment arrangements<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The MOL on-site visits will take place until July 31, 2015.\u00a0 According to the MOL\u2019s website, <a href=\"#_edn4\" name=\"_ednref4\">[iv]<\/a> Occupational health and safety inspectors will \u00a0be conducting proactive blitzes and initiatives on sector-specific hazards; these are also designed to raise awareness and increase compliance with the Ontario Health and Safety Act.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ednref1\" name=\"_edn1\">[i]<\/a> 2000, S.O. 2000, c. 41.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ednref2\" name=\"_edn2\">[ii]<\/a> \u201cInspection Blitzes Target Precarious Employment Violations in Ontario\u201d, News Release, May 19, 2015, Ministry of Labour, Government of Ontario &lt; http:\/\/news.ontario.ca\/mol\/en\/2015\/05\/inspection-blitzes-target-precarious-employment-violations-in-ontario.html&gt;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ednref3\" name=\"_edn3\">[iii]<\/a> \u201cFalling Through The Cracks\u201d, May 4, 2015, \u00a0Canadian HR Reporter \u2013 The National Journal of Human Resource Management at pg. 9.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ednref4\" name=\"_edn4\"><\/a>iv \u201cInspection Blitzes and Initiatives\u201d, May 2015, Ontario Ministry of Labour &lt;http:\/\/www.labour.gov.on.ca\/english\/resources\/blitzschedule.php&gt;.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Authored by Nevena Urosevic On May 19, 2015, the Ministry of Labour (\u201cMOL\u201d) announced inspection blitzes targeting precarious employment violations in Ontario.
