We\u2019re hearing about it on a daily basis and it has caused a significant degree of fear and uncertainty. Whether such fear is warranted is yet to be seen but in the face of uncertainty there are some things individuals and organizations can do. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Inform Yourself <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems obvious, but to effectively respond to an issue we need to first\neffectively understand it. For example, did you know that one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection\/prevention-risks.html#p\">key\npreventative measures<\/a> to reduce the risk of infection is washing your hands\nwith soap and water? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are a number of places you can look to for reliable information on COVID-19 (as coronavirus is also known):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection.html\">Public Health Agency of Canada<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/travelling\/health-safety\/travel-health-notices#risklevels\">Travel and Tourism Canada<\/a> (travel advisories)<\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/emergencies\/diseases\/novel-coronavirus-2019\">World Health Organization<\/a><\/li><li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/index.html\">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention<\/a> (CDC)<\/li><li>Provincial &amp; Territorial Health Agencies<\/li><li>Local \/ Regional Public Health Agencies<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Practical Considerations <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There is, as of yet, no national crisis and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection\/prevention-risks.html#r\">current\nrisk to Canadians remains low<\/a>. As of March 5, 2020 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/public-health\/services\/diseases\/2019-novel-coronavirus-infection.html#a1\">45\ncases of COVIS-19 had been confirmed in Canada<\/a>: 22 in Ontario, 21 in BC, 2 in\nQuebec and 1 in Alberta. But this is a good reminder that organizations should\nbe prepared for a variety of unexpected situations, including how to respond to\nviral or infectious outbreaks. So what should charities do to protect their\nemployees and volunteers? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The World Health Organization provides some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/docs\/default-source\/coronaviruse\/getting-workplace-ready-for-covid-19.pdf\">helpful\nrecommendations<\/a> as workplaces prepare for COVID-19, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Make sure your workplaces are clean and hygienic \u2013 wipe surfaces regularly with disinfectant<\/li><li>Promote hand-washing<\/li><li>Promote good respiratory hygiene<\/li><li>Brief employees that if COVID-19 starts spreading in your community, then even those with mild symptoms should stay at home<\/li><li> Consult national travel advisories before going on business trips<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cccc.org\/news_blogs\/wp-admin\/post.php?post=28791&amp;action=edit#_ftn1\">[1]<\/a><\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>*Note that for churches and charities involved in international ministries, adjusting travel plans may be complicated. Speak with your insurance provider and consider the risk management policy and contingency plans that you already have in place to help guide any decisions<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CDC has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/coronavirus\/2019-ncov\/specific-groups\/guidance-business-response.html\">additional\nrecommendations<\/a> for workplaces, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Identify any work-related exposure and health\nrisks to your employees<\/li><li>Ensure\nyour human resources policies are consistent with current public health\nrecommendations<\/li><li>Consider\nimplementing remote work arrangements or staggered shifts<\/li><li>Identify\nessential organizational functions, roles or jobs necessary to maintain\noperations and plan for illness or disruption<\/li><li>Establish clear communication processes to\ninform employees of risk, preventative measures, any organizational response\nplan, and what will trigger its application<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>It may also be prudent to review your workplace sick leave policies\nwith staff and become familiar with various employment standards provisions\nsuch as unpaid sick leave, to which employees are entitled. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/document\/your-guide-employment-standards-act-0\/sick-leave\">in\nOntario<\/a>, employees have the right to take up to three days of unpaid\njob-protected sick leave each calendar year. If an employee has a medical\ncertificate indicating that they cannot work because of sickness or quarantine,\nthey may also be entitled to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/services\/benefits\/ei\/ei-sickness.html\">Employment\nInsurance benefits<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, a CCCC Certified Member, published <a href=\"http:\/\/www.faithtoday.ca\/Magazines\/2009-Nov-Dec\/The-Pandemic-Challenge\">this article<\/a> in the wake of the H1N1 outbreak in 2009. Many of the suggestions and resources it contains are relevant to how churches can effectively prepare and respond. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Conclusion<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Christian charities, there is another dimension to consider. Even\nthough the future may be uncertain, we do not need to fear. Without ignoring\nthe risks, we should continue to trust in the Lord\u2019s promises and purposes. Let\nus pray for those in need as we keep on sharing the hope and healing that can\nbe found in Christ alone.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\"\/>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"#_ftnref1\">[1]<\/a> The <a href=\"https:\/\/travel.gc.ca\/travelling\/health-safety\/travel-health-notices#risklevels\">Canadian government<\/a> has identified China, Northern Italy and Iran as \u201cLevel 3\u201d risk. Canadians are advised to avoid all non-essential travel to these regions.
