As you navigate the beautiful yet demanding landscape of your mission, know that we are here with you every step of the way, providing invaluable tools, guidance, and a supportive community to help you thrive.
This Fall, we are pleased to offer New Member Resources to guide you through technology adoption and organizational changes. In response to our recent AI webinar, we've created a sample AI policy to help leaders think critically about how their organization can best use these emerging tools. We've also updated our resources on winding down or merging with another charity. There are several paths forward for organizations amid transition, and it's important for leaders to understand the various options and CRA processes. Also, we've added a resource to refresh your knowledge on the annual spending requirements for Canadian charities.
Our latest Charitable Sector Update looks deeper into the Clergy Residence Deduction (CRD) through the lens of a recent Tax Court decision, offering fresh insights and impacts on your ministry’s operations. Additionally, mark your calendars for our upcoming webinar on lobbying with Bob McCormick, who will share his experience and strategies.
The Green, our online community, continues to be a hub of insightful discussions, covering topics from apps for expense reimbursement to best practices for managing e-transfer donations. Join these conversations to enhance your ministry’s financial and operational harmony.
We hope this Bulletin inspires and informs you, aiding your mission with grace and efficiency. Thank you for being a cherished member of CCCC. Together, let’s advance the cause of Christ.
Create an Effective AI Policy for Your Charity
Integrating AI into your organization takes more than just adopting new technology; it demands a thoughtful, tailored approach to policy development. A well-crafted AI policy ensures that the new technology serves your organization's unique needs while mitigating risks and enhancing operational efficiency. Because no two charities are alike a one-size-fits-all AI policy can lead to inefficiencies or liabilities. Introduction to Generative AI helps you tailor an AI policy to your specific values, mission, and operations. We also share how CCCC is using various AI tools to create drafts, save time, and maintain high-quality work - all within a well-defined policy framework.

As your charity evolves, there may come a time when it must make the difficult decision to either close its doors or join forces with another organization. It may be that the charity has completed its mission, is experiencing financial difficulties, or is undergoing strategic shifts. If so, the charity's leaders can ensure compliance and preserve your organization’s legacy by selecting the best path forward. Closing or Reorganizing a Charity is an updated resource that provides the steps required for a smooth transition, whether your charity is closing outright or continuing its mission through an amalgamation, merger, or consolidation.
Read moreA Reminder of Annual Spending Requirements and the Disbursement Quota
The Disbursement Quota (DQ) is the minimum amount your registered charity must spend annually on charitable programs or qualifying disbursements to other registered charities or grantee organizations. A charity must stay compliant with this quota to maintain its charitable status and avoid penalties. This updated Disbursement Quota resource breaks down the complexities of the DQ, including how to calculate it and apply for relief if needed. While most churches and Christian charities exceed the DQ, it's still a good idea for new Board Members and charity administrators to become familiar with this regulation.

Read moreHave You Uncovered All the Ways Your Donors Can Give?
Our CCCC Community Trust Fund is here to simplify and enhance your donors' giving process. An impactful but potentially complex way to give is through the donation of securities. Donating securities allows a donor to get a tax receipt and mitigate any capital gains taxes accrued on the securities. Donors can contribute their assets and have the sale proceeds promptly disbursed to any Canadian registered charity, or charities, of their choice.
Our CTF Online Tool makes it easy for donors to navigate this process. They only need to focus on what and how much they would like to gift to your ministry!
Read moreA Different Take on the Clergy Residency Deduction
While we generally think of the status and function tests as the only two components to a successful clergy residency deduction claim, there is a third component. In addition to meeting these two tests, the remuneration received by the claimant must come from "an office or employment". The Tax Court of Canada reviewed this consideration, and whether the claimant was an employee or independent contractor of a Foundation, in Schroeder v. The King, 2024 TCC 56. A review of the decision and what it means for CRD claimants can be found in this blog.
Digital Rights in Quebec: Data Portability
Quebec is set to introduce a new data portability right on September 22, 2024, as part of broader efforts to enhance consumer data protection. This regulation allows individuals to transfer the personal data seamlessly between systems in a structured, machine-readable format. Consumers can also request and review their data held by organizations, emphasizing data transparency and control. Organizations that use, store and transmit information about Quebec residents must prepare to comply with these new requirements to ensure seamless data portability and timely responses to consumer requests.
